Strength/power – if you’re training for this, you’ll be looking for a work:rest ratio 1:3-1:6. So if your hard standing climb is 20 seconds, you’ll need a recovery of 60-120 seconds to gain the best results

Aerobic endurance – to build muscular endurance you need a ratio of around 1:1-1:3 to maximise your gains.

Session design

How do you ensure all riders get what they need in the same session? In a typical class of perhaps 20 riders, no two will be the same. There will always be one who’s not feeling tiptop, one could be back from holiday, one could be back from injury – you could have a couple of new riders, maybe some riders are training for an event. It’s a positive menagerie!
